Health Insurance

In order to be allowed to enroll at a German university, you are obliged to have a valid statutory health insurance.

Students from EU countries who have a European Health Insurance Card and students from non-EU countries who have bought health insurance for Germany in their home country need to get their insurance checked by a German health insurance company. At best, you will receive a certificate confirming the exemption from health insurance which you can use for registration at THI.

If you have no or insufficient health insurance, you need to obtain health insurance from a health insurance company in Germany. You are free to choose your health insurance company, please find below some examples. More information about the insurance can be obtained directly from the insurance company.

Addresses:

  • AOK Ingolstadt, Harderstraße 43, 85049 Ingolstadt
  • Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) Ingolstadt, Nördliche Rindstraße 19, 85057 Ingolstadt
  • DAK-Gesundheit, Donaustraße 6, 85049 Ingolstadt

Here you can find all kinds of insurances (please scroll down for English).

Registration at the city of Ingolstadt

You are required to register yourself as a citizen of Ingolstadt at the registry office as soon as you arrive and have permanent accommodation. This is one of the requirements you have to fulfil in order to open a bank account and to get a residence permit for your stay in Germany.

To get a citizen registration in Ingolstadt you will need:

You can send these documents via e-mail (buergeramt@ingolstadt.de) or you can send/leave a letter in the Neues Rathaus’ (“new city hall”) mail box. The address of the Neues Rathaus is Rathauspl. 4, 85049 Ingolstadt.

More information (in German) about the Citizen Registration can be found on the website of the “Bürgeramt Ingolstadt“.

Application for Residence Permit and Bank Account

Students from non-EU countries who are allowed to enter the Federal Republic of Germany without a visa (e.g. citizens of Brazil) have to apply for residence permit  3 months after having entered the country at the latest. Students who entered the Federal Republic of Germany with a visa must hand in the application for residence permit before their visa expires.

This video tutorial will guide you through the application for the residence permit (this video is only avaiable when you receive a moodle from THI).

Students from non-EU countries need to provide proof of financial means (861€ per month, value for the winter term 2020/21). This value can suffer minor changes with time, to check for the updated value you can access Bafoeg. This proof has to be handed in when applying for the residence permit. You may use the following documents:

Important: If your scholarship does not cover 861€ per month, the difference has to be deposited on a blocked account.

blocked account has to be activated after your arrival in Germany. A few days later, you will receive a debit card, PIN and information on online banking via post. Students from EU countries may open a regular bank account at any bank of their choice. You need your passport, confirmation of registration at the city of Ingolstadt and your confirmation of enrollment. Usually, the latter can be handed in later. Deutsche Bank provides plenty of information on blocked accounts on their website.

Please inform yourself on how the cancellation of your bank account works (some require doing it in person) and for how long you need the bank account for transfers of scholarships and/or possible salaries.

 German SIM card

Even though it’s not mandatory having a German SIM-Card, it can be a good choice when thinking in using 4G and it facilitates the communication with a possible German contact. The prepaid-SIM is the best option, since you can stop paying it whenever you want and since your stay in Germany is not so big.

Here are some addresses of companies that work with SIM-Card:

  • Vodafone, Ludwigstraße 16, 85049 Ingolstadt
  • O2, Theresienstraße 6, 85049 Ingolstadt
  • Telekom, Am Stein 5, 85049 Ingolstadt

 General Tips

  • Germany is known for its very strict laws regarding download, upload and streaming. Try to never download anything with copyright or any illegal/cracked software and NEVER open Torrent Programs. Streaming copyrighted content in third party sites can be a problem too. The penalty for doing these things can reach 1000€.
  • Always carry your passport with you.
  • A Brazilian or even international driving license is valid only until six months after your arrival.
  • Maybe during your stay in Germany, you will need to transfer money from a Brazilian bank account to your account or to someone from Germany. A safe and cheaper way is using an app called Transferwise. To find more information, access the official website.
